Item Race
A three-race cup in four lanes against three CPU Umas. Switch lanes to grab item boxes and dodge hurdles, use whatever you get to pull ahead or slow the others down, and score points in every race to win the cup.
Every cup comes from a seed; the daily one is the same for everyone.
Turn your phone sideways for a bigger track.
↑ ↓ or W S: switch lanes · Space or Z: use the item · → or Shift: spurt
The items
Every box gives a random item: wait for it to stop spinning and use it when it suits you. You can only carry one at a time.
- CarrotA burst of speed: for 1.5 s you run much faster, and it ends the rain if a cloud got you.1º2º3º4º
- HorseshoeFlies up your lane and trips the first rival it reaches.1º2º3º4º
- MudLeaves a puddle behind you in your lane for 10 s: whoever runs into it slips. It doesn't affect you.1º2º3º4º
- Rain cloudA rain cloud over whoever is first (if that's you, over the second): 2.5 s slower.1º2º3º4º
- CloverShields you from one hit (horseshoe, mud, hurdle, megaphone or cloud) for 8 s.1º2º3º4º
- MegaphoneA shout that makes every rival close to you stumble, ahead or behind, in any lane.1º2º3º4º
The bars show how likely each item is depending on your place when you open the box: the further back, the more carrots, rain clouds and megaphones.
Guide
How to play the Item Race
A pixel-art racing minigame with items: your Uma against three CPU rivals in four lanes, with item boxes to pull ahead or slow the others down. It is raced in three-race cups (1000, 1200 and 1400 m) or single races, and every day there is a new cup, the same for everyone.
How to play
- Choose your Uma out of the 40 and the mode: the daily cup, a free cup or a single race. In the free modes you also choose the CPU level.
- Press «Start the cup!» and wait for «Go!». Switch lanes with ↑ and ↓ (W and S; on a phone, the arrows under the track) to grab boxes and dodge hurdles and puddles of mud.
- Run through a box without an item and you get one at random. Once it stops spinning, use it with Space or Z (on a phone, «Item»): carrot, horseshoe, mud, rain cloud, clover or megaphone. You can only carry one at a time.
- Hold → or Shift («Spurt» on a phone) to go faster: it uses stamina, and if it runs out your Uma tires for a while. A hurdle, a puddle or a horseshoe knocks you down; a clover shields you from one hit for 8 s.
- Each race gives 5, 3, 2 and 1 points from first to last place. After the three races comes the cup podium: share it or try again.
Difficulty levels
- Easy
- Rivals are slower, see hurdles and mud late, and take their time using items.
- Normal
- Rivals keep nearly your pace, dodge most hurdles and use their items sensibly.
- Hard
- Rivals run as fast as you, hardly ever hit a hurdle, save their spurt for the end and use items as soon as it pays.
The daily challenge is always Normal.
Questions
- How does the daily cup work?
- Every day at midnight UTC there is a new cup on Normal: the same three courses, the same rivals and the same lanes for everyone, and the items come out the same if it is raced the same. You can race it as often as you like; your best cup of the day counts.
- Which item will I get?
- A random one, but the odds depend on your place when you open the box: the leader mostly gets mud, clovers and horseshoes, and the last mostly carrots, rain clouds and megaphones. The bars in the item list give the percentage of each.
- How do I dodge the hurdles?
- By switching lanes: each row of hurdles covers one or two of the four lanes, never all of them. If you don't move, your Uma hits it and falls. The rivals have to dodge them too, and on Easy they hit more than one.
- Does the CPU cheat?
- It sees nothing you don't: it looks ahead, moves out of the way of what is in its lane and uses its items by the same rules as you. The pack does stay together, though: a rival far behind runs a little faster and one far ahead a little slower.
- Which Umas can I race with?
- 40 pixel-art Umas. Whoever wins a race celebrates with an animation of her own, different for every Uma.
- Where are my scores kept?
- Only in this browser: bests, daily challenges done and day streaks. No account needed, and nothing is sent anywhere.
- Do I need to pay or sign up?
- No. The games are free, need no account and work on mobile.
